Personal Development ? Start Now or Miss Your Better Life | Healthy ...

Webmaster | October 28, 2012 (5 hours ago) | no comments

Personal Development ? Start Now or Miss Your Better LifePersonal development is the pursuit of learning, developing, honing and mastering the skills that help you become the best that you can, with all that you have.

It is the reaching for, and realizing of your full potential as a human being.

You want to live a full, productive life, but sometimes, you just don?t know where to begin.

There is so much information ?out there? that it can be overwhelming and hard to choose what is right for you.

Depending on your concerns what seems to work for one person, may not necessarily work for you.

There are so many different ideas, strategies, advice and techniques that it?s hard to chose the right one.

One thing, however, is certain. If you want to achieve anything in your life and realise your full potential, you must have some practical and positive skills ? life skills.

In order to excel at work, in a sport or in your relationships, you must acquire and master certain skills. Living your life fully, productively and with enjoyment is no different.

Crucially possessing life skills enables you to deal with the life?s inevitable challenges and adversities more effectively. It reduces your chances of procrastinating, finding yourself getting frustrated and stressed, engaging in addictive behaviours, and experiencing overall despair and hopelessness.

When you have the proper tools and actions at your disposal, you have more control over your life and time making you happier and more confident.

Taking the first steps

Your first step is establishing a firm foundation. That foundation must be ?you?. You need to know who you are, what you want, and what you are capable of. You must then determine which values, goals and principles you will establish to guide your actions.

Learning about and applying essential life skills will help you. It will help you to:

  • know and understand yourself better
  • live life more consciously and deliberately to attain personal satisfaction and fulfilment

The hardest part in dealing with any major challenge is taking the first step, however once you do, there is a surprising positive and snowball effect. You will begin to feel good about what you?re doing and you?ll want to take further steps. You will want to keep improving yourself and to become the very best that you can be.

Your continuing journey of personal development will make you aware that there is so much more knowledge and information to be discovered, and uncovered, than you ever thought possible ? knowledge about yourself, knowledge about others, knowledge about life and the world around you.

A fantastic life experience controlled by you, if you make a start.Personal development is about wanting and pursuing new experiences, knowledge and excellent relationships. Nothing should be left out in your pursuit of finding your future self and life fulfilment.

You desire the best for you and what you want

To support you and encourage you in your pursuit of improvement and in expanding your confidence, I suggest you to read and explore every area of interest that excites you.

Read inspirational quotes, and personal development articles that include helpful tips and actions, as well as other interesting advice.

The good news is that acquiring essential life skills will not only contribute to your personal growth and development, it will make you a more interesting and dynamic individual.

Why are these new skills and experiences essential?

Without them you will always feel that something is missing in your life. What good is all the financial success in the world if you don?t have self-confidence, or know who you really are, what you want, or what you?re doing here?

We?ve all witnessed many outwardly successful and famous people who have not been able to find personal happiness. No amount of fame or fortune could fill the void they felt inside.

Your steps to achieve more of your development potential confirm that it is important to follow a plan that includes actions to:

Develop a healthy self esteem by:

  • Start from where you are right now
  • Knowing yourself
  • Learn to love yourself
  • Always be true to yourself
  • Develop a personal value system
  • Keeping an honest perspective on life
  • Keep an open mind
  • Develop and keep a sense of humour
  • Show resilience
  • Accept the reality of your situation and the world.

Use your time effectively:

  • Don?t procrastinate
  • Develop clear realistic and personal goals
  • Have a daily priority plan
  • Make time for you and your family, friends
  • Find a hobby or pastime and enjoy it
  • Work to minimise your experience of stress

Fill any idle time with useful action:

  • Make money at home ? internet ? home tasks
  • Take affordable and enjoyable holidays
  • Undertake DIY projects
  • Enjoy gardening even if it just a window box
  • Take on board a hobby that brings you in contact with others
  • Make new friends by joining local social groups
  • Start a course of learning something that you will enjoy
  • Your health is vital so do exercise, (within the limits of your current ability) diet or join a health club
  • Develop new relationships even use Dating opportunities
  • Undertake serious study to enhance your expertise and help your brain to develop
  • Develop Speed reading to open up opportunities to help others or earn extra cash

The opportunities to develop yourself fill the internet, books, advice centres and your friends.

CHOOSE THOSE THAT WILL BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE AND MAKE YOU OPTIMISTIC ABOUT YOUR FUTURE.

Good Luck!!

Loneliness Ups Health Risks for SeniorsAdopting a positive attitude later in life offers a prescription for staying healthy during one?s golden years, according to a new study.

New research from Carsten Wrosch, Ph.D., a professor in Concordia University?s Department of Psychology, shows that older adults who approach life with a positive outlook can reverse the negative health issues associated with a lonely life.

?Our aim was to see whether using self-protective strategies ? such as thinking positively and avoiding self-blame in the context of common age-related threats ? could prevent lonely older adults from exhibiting increases in stress hormones and inflammatory biomarkers,? said Wrosch.

To test this, the research team followed 122 senior citizens over a six-year period. They measured self-protective strategies with a questionnaire where participants were asked to rate statements such as, ?Even if my health is in very difficult condition, I can find something positive in life,? or ?When I find it impossible to overcome a health problem, I try not to blame myself.?

The research team also asked the participants to what extent they felt lonely or isolated during a typical day.

The researchers also used saliva and blood samples to measure how much cortisol and C-reactive protein (CRP) the participants produced.

These two biological markers were chosen because cortisol is responsible for stress-related changes in the body. People with elevated CRP, on the other hand, are at increased risk of inflammatory illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

Their findings showed that positive thinking helped protect against an increase in cortisol secretion. Four years down the road, additional tests showed the participants? CRP levels had improved.

The researchers report that for those older adults who did not report feelings of loneliness, this type of thinking had no effect, supposedly because their social networks may help them deal with age-related problems.

Overall, these findings could contribute to successful aging, according to Wrosch.

?It?s my hope that our research may improve clinical treatment of lonely older adults,? he said.

?Older adults can be taught through counseling or therapy to engage in self-protective thoughts like staying positive when it comes to their own health. That means a better quality of life, both physically and mentally ? something we all want at any age.?

The study is set to be published in Psychosomatic Medicine.

Exclusive: Massachusetts' regulator eyes other firms on research

BOSTON (Reuters) - Massachusetts' top securities regulator said on Friday that his office is looking into whether top Wall Street investment banks in addition to Citigroup have leaked research in violation of state law on how to share this kind of information.

"We are looking at all of them, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan," regulator William Galvin said in a telephone interview about the probe. "It is a very active investigation," Galvin said, declining to give more information about what kind of charges may be made.

Earlier on Friday, Galvin's office said it has won a $2 million settlement with Citigroup after two of its analysts doled out information about top technology companies to a small number of journalists. Citi fired Mark Mahaney, the senior analyst in the case, and an unnamed junior analyst in the wake of the Massachusetts probe.

Galvin's office said Citi's junior analyst passed on some of the bank's confidential financial forecasts about Facebook while the senior analyst passed on confidential information about Google unit YouTube. Galvin said the Citi case was concluded first because his investigators were able to find emails to prove the information was discussed improperly.

"This is a recurring theme. The banks promise there is a firewall between research and marketing, that they will observe the quiet period, but that is clearly not the case," Galvin said.

He said he is pursuing the investigation nearly a decade after big banks reached a global settlement on research to make sure that investors are protected. "This is about not having two sets of rules one for preferred clients and one for everyone else," Galvin said.

Galvin has a reputation for acting quickly on issues where federal regulators may be slower to move in. "Mr. Galvin is very aggressive, and, in fairness, does a great job in upholding the law in Massachusetts," said Anthony Sabino, a business professor at St. John's University.

He also said there may be more to come on how the banks treated clients.

"Keep in mind this is but a preview of the ongoing shareholder litigation, regulatory investigations, and so on trying to find out what went wrong with the Facebook IPO."

'Penis Worm' Shakes Evolutionary Tree

penis worm Priapulid worm Priapulus caudatus in a Petry dish. The specimen was found in the intertidal of the Russian coast of the Barents Sea. Image: Flickr/Dmitry Aristov

A study on the development of priapulids or ?penis? worms throws doubt on a feature that has been thought for more than 100 years to define the largest branch of the animal tree of life. Members of this branch ? the protostomes ? have historically been defined by the order in which they develop a mouth and an anus as embryos. But gene-expression data suggest that this definition is incorrect, researchers report this week in Current Biology.

Evolutionary biologists will need to rename the protostomes. To do that, ?we need to rethink how our earliest ancestors developed,? says Andreas Hejnol, an evolutionary developmental biologist at the University of Bergen in Norway and lead author on the report.

Deep roots
Tiny differences in how embryos develop have defined branches of the animal tree of life because they can lead to monumental changes in adults. For example, a major step in evolution occurred when an embryonic ball of cells formed two indentations as opposed to one, giving way to a separate mouth and an anus rather than the single opening that creatures such as jellyfish and sea anemones have. In 1908, animals with a mouth and anus were divided into two groups. In the protostomes (from the Greek for ?mouth first?), the mouth formed first, and the anus second. In the other, the deuterostomes (?mouth second?), the mouth formed after the anus.

Today, the protostomes include priapulids and most other invertebrates. The deuterostomes include vertebrates such as humans and a few spineless animal lineages. Embryologists have examined only a fraction of animals in each group, because tracing how each cell divides and what it gives rise to remains technically challenging. Nonetheless, other characteristics, such as DNA sequence data, have supported the general shape of this evolutionary tree, and the division between protostomes and deuterostomes has persisted.

Shaking the tree
Now, using molecular techniques to analyze gene expression, Hejnol and his team have revealed that a primitive protostome, the priapulid Priapus caudatus, develops like a deuterostome. These ?living fossils? look nearly identical to their priapulid ancestors, which littered the ocean floor during the Cambrian period, when protostomes originated (see ?Protostome outlier?). That their development does not follow the protostome pattern suggests that early protostomes might also have developed differently. The order of the origin of the mouth and anus is now uncertain.

"Here is an animal that is the poster child for early protostomes, and it develops just like a deuterostome," says Mark Martindale, a developmental biologist at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. ?We?ve been using the name protostome for 100 years, and now it?s clear that it doesn?t mean anything.?

Priapulids are not simply placed on the wrong side of the tree. Other similarities, such as DNA sequences, indicate that they are closely related to their protostome kin. Further, this is not the first report of a maverick protostome. Embryologists who have watched invertebrates develop under a microscope have previously noted variations in how protostome mouths develop. Hejnol?s study corroborates the underlying diversity and takes the evidence further by backing it up with molecular techniques and assessing a primitive protostome, says Martindale.

The researchers observed where genes associated with mouth and anus formation turn on in three-day-old embryos. As the first cells caved in, genes typically expressed in animals? rears activated, indicating that the cells in this region form the anus. ?This is a big achievement because for years, people have wanted to do work like this in priapulids, but it?s technically very difficult,? says Detlev Arendt, an evolutionary developmental biologist at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany.

Judge to decide fate of West Penn investor talks

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The outcome of a court hearing set to begin on Thursday will determine whether a major regional healthcare system in Pennsylvania is driven into bankruptcy or will be allowed to seek other suitors after a $475 million merger deal with insurer Highmark Inc crumbled.

At stake is the fate of the nonprofit West Penn Allegheny Health System and nearly $740 million of municipal debt it issued in 2007. In an era of growing hospital consolidation across the country, West Penn's case is also an unusual one - a merger suddenly gone wrong.

The two initially announced their agreement in June, saying Highmark would take control of West Penn in exchange for a cash infusion that would allow West Penn, which had already shuttered some facilities, to avoid more layoffs and closures.

But the partnership imploded amid demands by Highmark that before it would consummate the transaction, West Penn must declare bankruptcy in order to reduce its burdensome debt load, according to court documents.

Allegheny County Judge Christine Ward will hear arguments on Thursday and Friday about whether she ought to grant a request from Highmark, filed October 1, to block West Penn from talking to other potential buyers and investors.

"If they're not allowed to potentially align themselves with someone else, they're out on an island by themselves," said Tom Metzold, co-director of municipal investments at Eaton Vance Management. "I don't see how they can survive otherwise."

Some attribute the change of tenor to the April departure of former Highmark CEO Kenneth Melani, who had resisted ideas that West Penn file for bankruptcy. He was fired after a fight with his girlfriend's husband led to an assault charge.

New CEO William Winkenwerder appeared at a West Penn board meeting on August 30 for the first time and said he wanted to renegotiate the terms of the agreement to include debt reduction, even bankruptcy, West Penn said in its countersuit.

POTENTIAL DOWNGRADES ON HORIZON

The heated dispute and the abrupt end to the planned alliance caused concern among all three major credit rating agencies. On September 28, the same day the public learned of the collapsed deal, the agencies warned that they might downgrade West Penn.

"We view this agreement as providing a strong path forward for them," Martin Arrick, senior nonprofit healthcare analyst for Standard & Poor's Ratings Services, told Reuters. "Without a Highmark merger, it's a much more difficult situation."

S&P rates West Penn at Caa1, already a speculative grade. West Penn has about $1.2 billion in assets but $1.4 billion in liabilities.

The first nine months of West Penn's fiscal year were strained, with the system's expenses exceeding revenues by nearly $76 million, according to the most recent data.

Net patient revenue was down 2.2 percent, or $25 million, from the same period in 2011. The system is now run by interim CEO Keith Ghezzi of the turnaround firm Alvarez & Marsal.

Pittsburgh-based Highmark, one of the 10 largest health insurers in the United States, has already provided $225 million to West Penn under the terms of their agreement. How much of that money constitutes a loan, which must be repaid, rather than a grant is also likely to be a contentious issue as the court case unfolds.

SOME DEBT REDUCTION STILL LIKELY

West Penn has also lost some business to its main regional rival, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, rated A-plus by S&P. In a continuing lawsuit, West Penn accuses UPMC of stifling competition.

West Penn has also suffered financially from regional demographic changes, including an aging population and increasing Medicare patients, Arrick said.

West Penn, which is highly leveraged, has been trying to find a way out of its difficult financial bind for several years. It has lost patients and has significant pension expenses, he said.

West Penn could still find other potential investors if the judge allows it, according to Alan Schankel, head of fixed income research at Janney Montgomery Scott LLC.

"There's always suitors," he said. "There's always a chance that even somebody not from that area, looking to expand or grow, would come into the market."

But the terms offered by another partner would likely still require some debt reduction, or bankruptcy. That could even push West Penn back into discussions with Highmark if West Penn sees that "just about every road they could possibly go down leads to the same thing," Schankel said.

"I think West Penn's future is pretty dim," he said. "I'm not sure how they can avoid some kind of bankruptcy."

Some of West Penn's doctors on Wednesday wrote an open letter to Governor Tom Corbett, asking him to intervene and seeking to get negotiations with Highmark reopened.

The system's municipal bonds, which mature in November 2040, sold at about 70 cents on the dollar as of October 19, according to Municipal Market Data, a unit of Thomson Reuters. On the day West Penn announced that the merger was off, they had been selling for as much as 86 cents on the dollar.

Israel: Gaza rocket strikes Eshkol, no injuries

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- At least one rocket fired from the Gaza Strip landed in southern Israel on Tuesday, the Israeli military said.

No injuries were reported, an army representative said.

The attack came hours after Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine fighters claimed responsibility for an attack that wounded an Israeli soldier on the Gaza border.

The Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades said it was responsible for a bomb that went off beside an army patrol east of Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would deliver a strong response to the attack. "We will fight and we will hit them very, very hard," Netanyahu said.

The wounded officer was evacuated by helicopter to hospital, the Israeli military said in a statement.

On Monday, the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades said it had fired mortars at soldiers and cross-border rockets east of Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza Strip after Israeli forces killed two Palestinian fighters in airstrikes early Monday morning.

Fright Night director Craig Gillespie to helm Jon Hamm in true sports drama Million Dollar Arm

Jon Hamm and the Million Dollar Arm duo

Last reported on back in May, it seems like Jon Hamm's upcoming starring vehicle MILLION DOLLAR ARM is on the verge of securing a director in the form of Craig Gillespie.? I presume this means that production is moving closer to commencing, though there is technically no start date as of yet for the movie.?

Gillespie is an interesting man to watch (in both sense of the phrase), having moved in recent years from crass comedy (MR. WOODCOCK) to emotional drama replete with a quietly fantastic visual sense(LARS AND THE REAL GIRL) to horror reimagining (FRIGHT NIGHT).? Should negotiations go through, and I can't imagine why they wouldn't, Gillespie will be helming a script from Tom McCarthy (WIN WIN) that tells the true story about "how sports agent J.B. Bernstein discovered professional pitchers Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel through a reality show he staged in India with cricket players."

And here's some further elaboration on the true story MILLION DOLLAR ARM means to tell: Bernstein noticed how similar the game's throwing motion was to that of baseball pitchers and created the reality show "Million Dollar Arm" to audition 40,000 cricket players. Not only did he have to teach Singh and Patel the rules of baseball, but he also had to teach them about American culture and speaking English. Bernstein's work paid off when the duo became the first Indian players to sign with pro baseball teams when they got contracts with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

When negative political ads work

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Televised political advertising takes up a large portion of campaign budgets, much of which are spent on negative political ads. But do these negative ads work? A new study by Juliana Fernandes, assistant professor of strategic communication at the University of Miami School of Communication, shows that a negative political ad is most effective when it's shown in moderation.

The findings reveal that massive exposure to a negative ad has a backlash effect on the evaluation of the sponsoring candidate.

"People will be more likely to appreciate and vote for the candidate who is sponsoring the negative advertisement if the ad is presented in a spaced-out manner, over time," says Fernandes. "A candidate who doesn't have a large budget for political advertising can use the same advertising over and over again, but in a way that is more strategic."

In the study, university students participated in two separate tests. First, 150 participants watched the repetition of a 30-second negative political ad of candidates that were likely unknown to participants (one, three, or five exposures). The ads were presented sequentially, characterizing the presentation as massive. The results show that evaluation and the likelihood of voting for the sponsor candidate was highest when the participants were exposed to the ad three times and lowest when they were exposed to the ad five times.

In the second test, 306 university students watched advertisements for unknown candidates within a 30-minute television program, with varying time intervals between ad repetitions. Afterwards, participants filled out questionnaires to evaluate the sponsor and the attacked candidates as well as the likelihood of voting for them.

The results indicate that larger time intervals between repetitions of the ad favor the evaluation of the sponsor candidate and disfavor the evaluation of the target candidate. This was true even with increased repetition, suggesting that the sponsor candidate can avoid the backlash effect by allowing larger time intervals between ad exposures.

"In my study, I show that negative political ads do work under certain conditions," Fernandes says. "I think they can help the political process because people can look at some facts, process the information more carefully, and later on -- when people cast their votes -- they can make an informed decision."

The study is titled "Effects of Negative Political Advertising and Message Repetition on Candidate Evaluation." Its findings will be published in the March 2013 edition of the journal Mass Communication and Society.

In the future, Fernandes would like to investigate valance variation, such as what happens when there are repeated negative and positive political ads and when there are negative ads sponsored by opposing candidates. She would also like to analyze the possible effects of individual variables, such as gender and party affiliation.

NCAA to rule on UCF's postseason appeal in January, Knights bowl eligible

With a win at Marshall Saturday, the UCF football team is a lock to play in a bowl game in 2012, even with an NCAA appeal hanging over the program's head.

The NCAA will not rule on UCF's appeal of their one-year bowl ban until late January, head coach George O'Leary said Tuesday, meaning the Knights (5-2, 3-0 in C-USA) will be eligible to play for a Conference USA Championship and compete in a bowl game in 2012.

According to NCAA bylaws, a school cannot be punished during an appeals process.

The postseason ban was the only penalty UCF appealed from sanctions handed down by the NCAA in late July stemming from major recruiting violations within the football and men's basketball programs. The basketball program also received a one-year postseason ban in basketball, but chose not to appeal. In addition to the bans, the school received a $50,000 fine, five years' probation, reduction of scholarships, and the basketball program was forced to vacate wins from the 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.

Back on July 31, President John C. Hitt and Athletic Director Todd Stansbury held a press conference issuing a response to NCAA's sanctions against UCF.

?We understand and generally accept the findings and sanctions imposed by the committee, and we are in the process of thoughtfully considering the various elements of the report,? Hitt said on July 31. ?We have decided, however, to appeal the decision by the Committee on Infractions to impose a postseason ban for the 2012 football season. We don?t believe the ?aggravating factors? cited from the NCAA bylaws justify this sanction.?

If UCF does in fact lose the appeal, the ban would be moved to next season, their first in the Big East Conference.

Content Marketing: What You Need to Know - Ntt.cc

girl-beauty-consultant-products-icon Many business owners are turning to the web to help them market their business and there are plenty of good reasons for doing this. Many expert online marketers claim online marketing is less expensive than other types of marketing but also more effective. According to several online studies, people will search for a product or service online before they decide to buy it. What does the average consumer look for when searching for these products or services?

Well, for starters, they want more information about the product. They want to know they?re making a good purchase, what the product is used for and how to upkeep or maintain it. They are really looking for any additional information they can find about the industry, the product or the service, and this is exactly the need that content marketing meets.

While this type of marketing has been around for a long time, just look at the number of real estate magazines sitting around on coffee tables, it has only just recently reached the online world. Current online technologies allow anyone to become a writer or publisher (so long as you have interesting information to share).

All you have to do is write interesting articles about your industry, which can include information, explain how something is done or offer some type of tips and tricks. Remember, the Internet is about sharing knowledge, so, the more you have to share, the more of an expert you become in your industry.

Intangibles

Online content marketing can benefit anyone, because it creates information about your industry and links back to your website, creating what Phorm experts call the Phorm Rapid ORM (Object Relational Mapper); showing all the content that links back to your website. This offers a kind of map for viewers to follow back to your service or product website.

However, this marketing method especially helps businesses that offer intangible products or services, as products like e-books, reports or videos can?t really be tasted, seen in a local magazine or book store, or picked up and held. These are products that can only be sold by being talked about, and the best person to talk about them on the web is you. After all, you are the expert on the matter!

How Does it Work?

Content marketing is the process of writing and publishing information to blogs, online magazines and informational websites, and offering a link back to your website for readers to click on and get even more information. The key to being successful as a content marketer lies in offering engaging information which people will read, and creating interest in your industry, service or product (a process that isn?t as easy as it appears to be.)

Consistency

For content marketing to be successful, you need to be consistent, offering information on a regular basis, and ensuring each piece of content links back to your services or product. This creates much of the support connecting people back to your website. Once they create this content rapport with you, and feel you are qualified to offer advice and news about your service or industry, then these readers often become your customers.

You can skip to the end and leave a response. Pinging is currently not allowed.

A daily dose of acetylsalicylic acid equivalent to a fourth of an aspirin may slow the decline in intellectual capacity among elderly individuals with high cardiovascular risk. This is shown in a study by Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, over a five year period studied how intellectual capacity changes among 681 elderly women (70 to 92 years) with heightened risk of suffering from a heart attack, vascular spasm or stroke.

Of the 681 women, 129 received a low daily dose of acetylsalicylic acid, equivalent to a fourth of an aspirin, to prevent heart disease. The Gothenburg study shows that acetylsalicylic acid also slowed decline in brain capacity among the elderly women.

In the study, published in British Medical Journal Open, the women underwent various tests to measure their physical health and intellectual capacity, such as language and memory tests.

"At the end of the five year examination period mental capacity had declined among all the women and the portion that suffered from dementia was equally large in the entire group. However, the decline in brain capacity was significantly less and occurred at a slower pace among the women who received acetylsalicylic acid," says Silke Kern, researcher at Sahlgrenska Academy.

The effect remained even when age, genetic factors and use of anti-inflammatory drugs were taken into account.

In addition to preventing heart disease, acetylsalicylic acid has been shown to be effective against cancer according to several scientific studies. It is common practice in many countries to treat women at risk for heart disease with a small dose of acetylsalicylic acid but not in Sweden.

Silke Kern emphasizes that the study is an observational study and that more research is necessary before any definitive conclusions can be made.

"Our results indicate that acetylsalicylic acid may protect the brain, at least among women at high risk for a heart attack or stroke. However, we do not know the long term effects of routine treatment. We certainly do not want to encourage the elderly to self-medicate with aspirin to avoid dementia," she states.

The research group in Gothenburg has now started a follow-up study that will follow the older women for an additional five years.

White House prepared to meet with Iran

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House says it is prepared to talk one-on-one with Iran to find a diplomatic settlement to the impasse over Tehran's reported pursuit of nuclear weapons, but there's no agreement now to meet.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said Saturday that President Barack Obama has made clear that he will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and will do whatever's necessary to block that from happening. Vietor said Iran must come in line with its obligations, or else faced increased pressure.

"The onus is on the Iranians to do so, otherwise they will continue to face crippling sanctions and increased pressure," Vietor said in a statement. He noted that efforts to get Iran back to the table with the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany ? the so-called "P5+1" ? continue.

Iran has been a recurring issue in the presidential election campaign and Vietor's statement was released shortly after The New York Times reported Saturday that the U.S. and Iran have agreed in principle for the first time to negotiations. The paper said Iran has insisted the talks wait until after the Nov. 6 election.

Vietor, however, denied that any such agreement had been reached.

"It's not true that the United States and Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks or any meeting after the American elections," he said. "We continue to work with the P5+1 on a diplomatic solution and have said from the outset that we that we would be prepared to meet bilaterally."

Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will meet Monday night in a debate focusing on foreign policy and Iran's nuclear ambitions will likely be a topic. Obama has said he'll prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He hopes sanctions alongside negotiations can get Iran to halt uranium enrichment. But the strategy, which began during President George W. Bush's administration, hasn't worked yet. Obama holds out the threat of military action as a last resort. Romney has accused Obama of being weak on Iran and says the U.S. needs to present a greater military threat.

Despite unprecedented global penalties, Iran's nuclear program is advancing as it continues to defy international pressure, including four rounds of sanctions from the U.N. Security Council, to prove that its atomic intentions are peaceful.

Those sanctions, coupled with tough measures imposed by the United States and European nations are taking their toll, particularly on Iran's economy. Iranian authorities have in recent weeks been forced to quell protests over the plummeting value of the country's currency. The rial lost nearly 40 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar in a week in early October, but has since slightly rebounded.

U.S. officials say they are hopeful that pressure from the sanctions may be pushing Iran's leaders toward concessions, including direct talks with the United States. But several said on Saturday that they did not believe such discussions would happen any time soon.

If one-on-one talks are to occur, they would likely follow the model that the U.S. has used in six-nation nuclear disarmament talks with North Korea, the officials said.

In those discussions, U.S. negotiators have met separately with their North Korean counterparts but only as part of the larger effort, which also involves China, Japan, South Korea and Russia. Direct U.S.-North Korean talks are preceded and followed by intense consultations with the other members of the group.

However, the direct talks with North Korea have yet to bear fruit and U.S. officials warned that talks with Iran may not yield anything either. If U.S.-Iran talks do occur, they would likely be part of the P5+1 process, which groups the Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States and is overseen by the European Union. The group has met numerous times with Iranian officials but has yet to achieve any significant progress.

In late September, the group instructed EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to reach out to Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, to organize another meeting. No date had been set for the possible resumption of talks.

Iran says its program is for peaceful energy and research purposes but Western nations fear the Islamic republic is determined to develop nuclear weapons and fundamentally reshape the balance of power in the Middle East. That would pose a grave threat to Israel.

Israel has threatened to strike Iran's nuclear facilities if Tehran doesn't stop uranium enrichment a process that can be a pathway to nuclear arms. Israel could decide to strike Iran's nuclear sites on its own, and Israeli leaders say time to act is running out. They have also hinted they would like U.S. support for any such attack.

An Israeli strike on Iran with or without Washington's involvement would likely draw retribution from Tehran including possible attacks on U.S. and Israeli interests overseas or disruptions to the transit of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, which could send oil prices skyrocketing.

Obama has counseled patience as public as American public support for another Mideast conflict is low with the Iraq war over and the conflict in Afghanistan winding down.

The Best Way to Peel an Apple for Cooking or Baking

The Best Way to Peel an Apple for Cooking or BakingThe Best Way to Peel an Apple for Cooking or Baking Peeling an apple isn't rocket science, but if you're looking for a method to safely minimize the amount of flesh you lose while giving you sizable chunks of peel you can use for other things, this method from the folks at Food52 is worth a shot.

You'll need a vegetable peeler and a knife for this one, and you cut the top and bottom of the apple off in small pices so the apple is flat on both sides. This makes it easy to hold the apple safely to use the peeler on it, and lets you slide off flat, straight sections of peel that you can save for mulling spices, fruit jelly, or even apple tea. You also end up with an easy-to-handle apple left behind that's simple to core or chop into chunks for baking or cooking.

Of course, if you're just going to eat the apple raw, this is a lot of work just to get the peel off (and who wants to lose the top and bottom?) but we can see it being useful if you're going to dice, slice, or chop up the apple for cooking.

Normal pregnancy isn't an ADA-covered disability ? Business ...

Employees undergoing normal pregnancies don?t have an ADA claim.

Recent case: Anamaria worked for Target and was fired during the last phases of a pregnancy, allegedly for missing too much work. She sued, alleging both pregnancy discrimination under Title VII and disability discrimination under the ADA.

The court tossed out her ADA claim. It reasoned that the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) was enacted before the ADA. If Congress had wanted to add pregnancy as an ADA disability, it would have done so explicitly. It didn?t. That?s presumably because it believed the PDA already offered enough protection. (Penaloza v. Target, No. 8:11-CV-33, MD FL, 2012)

Final note: Anamaria hadn?t worked for Target long enough to qualify for FMLA leave. She was fired and would have given birth before ever becoming eligible.

Algam: Sile and Kanloi

Landscape
Algam is a union of two people with a long history of cooperation: Sile and Kanloi. Humans refer to Algam as the Beastlands. Algam is bordered in the north by the eastern range of the Teeth, but the mountains are more craggy here than in Id-Heren, and not as tall. Dragons have not been seen for centuries. Rivers flow from the Teeth, irrigating Algam?s lush forests.

The vast majority of Algam?s earth is covered with trees. Sunlight struggles to pierce the forest?s dense ceiling of leaves. Plant life grows wildly here, with trees that possess trunks wider than three men could span, and fruits the size a small family could not hope to finish. Wildlife trails appear and disappear sporadically, confusing even experienced trackers.

To the east of Algam lies the Desert, a magical wasteland. Even though rivers run through it, very few plants grow. People grow ill if they wander here for extended periods of time, and criminals are sent out into the sands to die. The Desert seems to invade Algam a little more with each year, causing inhabitants of the forests considerable worry.

A number of war camps exist toward the human border. They consist of simple wooden huts that can may be abandoned at a moment?s notice, and are inhabited by hunters, warriors, and the few magicians Algam possesses. Cages are set up for prisoners of war. A number of Fire magicians stand guard in rotation, wary for the frequent surprise attacks of Citian mages.

The villages are located much deeper into the forest. War-camp huts pale in comparison to the houses crafted here. The people of Algam build with nature, not against it. Beautiful wooden cottages stand beside the trees, as if the forest itself grew them. In Sile, the powerful branches bear luxurious tree houses, defensible and hidden from the casual observer. In Kanloi, they used to live in underground homes, burrowed into hillsides. Tree houses and underground dwellings are considered old-fashioned nowadays, and most of these date back to a time when wars between Sile and Kanloi still occurred.

People
The people of Sile and Kanloi are corrupted by magic. From their birth, they show avian and reptilian characteristics, respectively. The extent of this varies wildly ? in extreme cases, some may be able to pass for humans in concealing clothes.

The people of Sile grow patches of soft white feathers on parts of their body. They have lithe, agile bodies, but they are fragile: their bones are not hollow, but they are much more porous than those of humans. The Sile may possess tough legs that end in avian feet, three toes forward and one back, equipped with vicious talons. The grip of these feet are powerful enough to scale trees with their legs alone. A very small number of children in each generation are born with wings ? growing from their shoulders, replacing the Sile?s normal, feathery arms. Until the Sky Maiden awakened her Wind magic, the Sile had never flown. Their lifespan is comparable to that of humans.

The people of Kanloi form colorful scales on their bodies. These scales are tough ? and if someone were to compare them, they?d find them harder than those of dragons. Their bodies pack a lot of muscle in small frames, but they are sluggish, and vulnerable where they have no scales. Their hands may end in sharp, scaled claws, and their spine may extend in a small, non-functional tail. Their vision is no different from that of a human, but some may be born with slit pupils. If left in peace, Kanloi live to be approximately two hundred years old. They have the greatest magic potential of all races, and their Queen was the first Fire magician to call down lightning.

The two races may produce offspring together. This is generally avoided because of the disparity in life span. Should a child be born, however, it will take after the mother.

Next to the native people, humans also live in Algam. Most of them are prisoners, but some are there willingly. The Apostle recruited a number of them on covert forays into Spelheim, while others betrayed their country for their own reasons. Several former prisoners of war have taken residence in Algam ? primarily those unwillingly drafted into Spelheim?s military service. These humans are bound to Algam with small facial tattoos. Those that are trusted enough to become spies receive the tattoo someplace clothing can cover.

The Sile and Kanloi are wary of these humans, but since their King Consort, the Red King, is also human, most are willing to grant them the benefit of the doubt. Some inhabitants of Algam simply want them dead, however.

Government and politics

Spelheim claims the Red King and the Apostle jointly rule the Beastlands. This is part of the Council's human superiority propaganda, and thus nonsense.

Since the unification of Algam, it has been governed by a King and a Queen, one of each race. The union is a meritocracy at heart, and the throne is assigned to trained monarch candidates. Those that are not chosen for the throne assume the position of advisors. Nepotism is looked down upon, and only exceptional intelligence would qualify a prince or princess for candidacy.

The current Queen has a rather unyielding personality, and she has elected to take a human, the Red King, as her husband. Being untrained, however, he remains a mere King Consort, subordinate to the Queen, but higher in rank than her advisors. The Apostle is treated as an advisor.

Technology

Algam possesses no greatly advanced metalworking or science. Its people do have an extensive knowledge of herbal medicine however, and the many poisons of the forest lend themselves well to the people's guerilla-like warfare. Soldiers are trained with both bows and blowpipes.

Religion

Algam has no organized religion. The introduction of magic has made some people wonder, but they adhere to their ancient values of respecting and revering nature.
