Casio XJ-H2650

The Casio XJ-H2650 isn't Casio's brightest projector, but it's part of Casio's Pro Series, which is its brightest line of projectors. It also offers WXGA (1280 by 800) native resolution, the highest in the Pro Series line. That's a moderately big deal, because until now, if you wanted a WXGA Casio projector you had to settle for one of the lower brightness models. The XJ-H2650 delivers the highest brightness Casio offers with WXGA resolution, and the highest resolution with Pro Series brightness, all of which makes it a good choice for mid-size conference rooms and classrooms.

Casio rates the XJ-H2650 at 3500 lumens, a bit less bright than the 4,000 lumen Casio XJ-H1750 Pro Series that I reviewed earlier this year. However, the XJ-H1750 offers a native XGA (1,024 by 768) resolution.

The only other Pro Series model with WXGA resolution is the XJ-H2650's near twin, the Casio XJ-H2600 ($2,000 street). Casio says that the two models are identical except for the addition of USB A, USB B, and LAN ports to the XJ-H2650, along with features that depend on those ports. Most notably, the XJ-H2650's USB A port lets you plug in a supplied Wi-Fi adaptor so you can connect directly with, and send data images from, Windows and Mac computers as well as most Android, iOS, and Windows smartphones and tablets.

The extra ports also let you plug in a memory key to read JPG and a few other file formats directly, control the projector over a network, send data images over a network, and add interactivity with an interactive pen and software option ($260 street). However, the interactive feature is hard to recommend, since the projector's standard-throw lens would make it hard to interact with the image without casting shadows that would get in the way. All other features on the XJ-H2600 and XJ-H2650 should be identical, so the rest of the comments in this review should apply to both.

Basics, Setup, and Connections
Like all current Casio projectors, the XJ-H2650 is built around Casio's hybrid light source, consisting of LEDs and a laser paired with a DLP chip. The LEDs produce the red and blue primaries directly. The laser shines on a phosphor element to produce green.

Not too surprisingly, given that both projectors are part of the same Pro Series, the XJ-H2650 shares a lot of its basic features with the XJ-H1750. In particular, it weighs almost the same, at 15.6 pounds, which makes it most appropriate for permanent installation or room to room portability on a cart.

Setup is standard, with a manual focus and a manual 1.2x zoom, which gives you some welcome flexibility in how far you can put the projector from the screen for a given size image. In addition to the LAN and USB ports I've already mentioned, connection choices include the usual HDMI for a computer or video source, VGA for computer or component video, and both S-video and composite video inputs.

Brightness and Eco Modes
In my tests, the XJ-H2650 was easily bright enough in its brightest mode for a 78-inch wide (92-inch diagonal) image to stand up to the typical level of ambient light in an office or classroom setting. Even better, it was bright enough at that size so you could easily take advantage of its eco modes to minimize power use and save on electricity.

Most projectors offer one bright mode and one eco mode that lets you lower brightness and power consumption. Beyond that, they offer color presets that can also affect brightness, but are, in theory, meant to adjust color.

The XJ-H2650 gives you more flexibility for brightness and power use, with two non-eco modes, which I measured at 340 watts and 290 watts, plus five eco modes, with a measured range of 260 to 115 watts. With multiple eco modes, you have the freedom to pick the best color setting first, and then choose the least bright mode with the brightness you need, instead of using the color presets to adjust brightness. Also worth mention is that the only projector I've seen with more eco-mode levels is the laser-based BenQ LX60ST that I recently reviewed.

FIFA names 2018 World Cup venues in Russia

MOSCOW (AP) -Three stadiums in Moscow will host some 2018 World Cup games, among the dozen arenas finalized by FIFA on Saturday for the first cup in Russia.

The centerpiece will be Moscow's 89,000-seat Luzhniki Stadium, which hosted the Champions League final in 2008. Work on redeveloping it is due for completion in 2016.

Among the 11 cities to host matches are St. Petersburg, and the Black Sea city of Sochi to the south.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter said at the venue announcement that Russia's preparations were ahead of schedule.

NHL lockout: Labor talks resume after 2-week break

NEW YORK (AP) ? With the clock ticking down to the start of the season, the NHL and its locked-out players are talking again.

The sides have resumed negotiations at league headquarters Friday. These are the first talks since the lockout was put in place and they come a day after the league canceled the remaining preseason games. The regular season is to start Oct. 11.

The league and the union are to discuss secondary issues and not the core of the dispute ? how to split more than $3 billion in annual revenue.

The sides are expected to break after the morning negotiations before bargaining again in the late afternoon. The negotiations are expected to last through the weekend.

Satellite launch stirs passions in Venezuela

CARACAS ?? Venezuela will launch its second satellite on Friday in a move President Hugo Chavez says highlights the achievements of his self-styled revolution ahead of an election, but which his rival says underscores his neglect of problems closer to home.

It is a close race with just nine days to go before the vote in South America's biggest oil exporter. Both sides are planning huge rallies next week to close their campaigns, as well as making last-ditch efforts to win over undecided voters.

Opposition candidate Henrique Capriles says Chavez is focused on spreading his socialist project around the world - and has done little to address the daily problems of Venezuelans such as crime.

The "Miranda Satellite," which will be launched from China, is a prime example of what he calls Chavez's grandiose plans. For the government, it is a symbol of sovereign pride.

"It is a reaffirmation of our path towards independence, in all areas of knowledge," Science Minister Jorge Arreaza said on Twitter. "The rancid bourgeois (opposition) dismiss it and humiliate the workers ... who designed and built it. How sad!"

Like the "Simon Bolivar Satellite" launched from China in 2008, officials say the new spacecraft will help the government monitor the environment, improve urban planning and even crack down on illegal mining and drug cultivation.

Both satellites were named after 19th-century independence heroes. Live footage of Friday's late-night launch is due to be beamed from China to big screens in Caracas' museum district, where officials were gearing up for a street party.

In the run-up to previous elections, Chavez has often unveiled many projects in an effort to impress voters. This time, his campaigning has been much less intense, partly because he has suffered two bouts of cancer since June 2011.

'Chavez is tired'
Chavez, 58, is warning his "bourgeois" foe will scrap his social welfare programs, while Capriles wants to tap discontent over crime, unemployment and inefficient public services.

In a jab at the baseball-loving president, the opposition candidate held a rally on Thursday at the home stadium of Chavez's favorite team, Los Navegantes del Magallanes.

"The president is like a pitcher whose arm is tired. ...? We need a new one," Capriles told the cheering crowd in Carabobo state.

The latest surveys by Venezuelan pollsters have been sharply divergent. Most of the best-known polls show Chavez ahead, but Capriles' numbers have been creeping up. Polls are notoriously controversial in Venezuela and public opinion shifts quickly.

Investors expect Capriles to end a five-year nationalization drive if he wins, and reduce state intervention in the economy.

Chavez has vowed to strengthen his oil-financed socialism if he gets another six years in office. That is likely to mean fresh confrontation with the private sector, and more support for the president's leftist allies around the region.

Capriles says he believes Chavez is willing to step down if he loses on Oct. 7. But some radical members of the opposition fear the president could do anything to stay in power, from rigging the vote to sending armed supporters into the street.

During previous elections there have been plenty of accusations of small-scale fraud at remote polling stations ? but no evidence of widespread, centralized rigging.

Venezuela's widely traded debt has risen as Capriles' poll numbers have inched up. Its popular Global 2027 bond has climbed by more than 3.5 percent in the last week alone.

Wall Street would like a more business-friendly leader in Venezuela, although Chavez's government has never given any sign of defaulting on the country's debts.

Nikon Coolpix S800c starting to ship in U.S and Australia

Despite being somewhat overshadowed by the Jelly Bean toting Samsung Galaxy Camera, we shouldn't forget about the Nikon Coolpix S800c. Having been announced prior to IFA 2012 where we first saw the Galaxy Camera, all fell quiet ahead of an expected late September release. It's now late September, and we're starting to see some of the first retailers with stocks of the camera. 

Down under, in Australia, the S800c is showing up in stock at CameraCity for AU$399 plus delivery and is available in black or white. According to the guys at Ausdroid, no local retailers are showing the device in stock, but some are showing up in retailers systems to place orders for. 

Back across the Pacific, and one of the earliest U.S. retailers to announce pre-orders for the S800c, B+H Photo Video, also shows the camera as in stock. Initially they only have the white version, but the black is due to ship any time soon. Pricing is set at $349.95 with free shipping to the U.S. 

Considering the expected price for the Galaxy Camera, the Nikon could be a bit of a steal. The Galaxy Camera offers more on the Android front, that goes without saying, with the Nikon languishing on Gingerbread. But, we should remember this is supposed to be a camera first and foremost, and it's really this end of the device that matters the most. Obama, Netanyahu seek to get past Iran differences

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented a show of unity on Friday on preventing a nuclear-armed Iran, seeking to tone down the acrimony between the two leaders that has become an issue in the final stretch of the U.S. presidential race.

Obama, widely seen as having snubbed Netanyahu by not meeting face to face with him during his U.S. visit, spoke instead by phone to the Israeli prime minister amid signs of movement toward a truce in their war of words over how to confront Tehran.

Netanyahu used his U.N. speech a day earlier to keep pressure on Washington to set a "red line" for Tehran, something Obama has refused to do. But in a softening of his approach, the hawkish Israeli premier signaled that no attack on Iran was imminent before the November 6 U.S. presidential election.

With an eye to the close presidential contest, Netanyahu also fielded a call during his New York visit from Obama's Republican rival, Mitt Romney, who has accused the president of being too hard on a close ally and not tough enough on Iran.

Romney has sought to use Obama's differences with Netanyahu to raise doubts with Jewish-American voters about Obama's commitment to Israel's security.

Obama's aides believe, however, that he has played his cards right with Netanyahu, with whom the president has had a notoriously testy relationship.

Netanyahu's strident complaints about U.S. policy on Iran in mid-September plunged U.S.-Israeli relations into crisis, but also spurred a backlash at home and in the U.S. media for seeming to meddle in American politics.

In recent days, the Israelis have sought to dial down the rhetoric, culminating in Netanyahu's speech to the General Assembly, which was seen as sending a message that Israel would not blindside Washington with a unilateral attack on Iran any time soon.

"The two leaders underscored that they are in full agreement on the shared goal of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," the White House said in a summary of their 20-minute phone conversation.

The White House said the two agreed to continue their cooperation, but it stopped short of saying Obama had given any ground on his resistance to issuing an ultimatum to Tehran, as Netanyahu has repeatedly demanded.

"I had a very good conversation with President Obama," Netanyahu told Israel television. "Our teams are talking."

An Obama aide went further, saying, "The temperature is lower than it had been."

TONING DOWN DIFFERENCES

Netanyahu dramatically ramped up pressure on Obama earlier this month when he insisted the United States did not have a "moral right" to hold Israel back from taking action against Iran because Washington had not set its own limits on Tehran.

That was followed by word that Obama would not meet Netanyahu during the Israeli leader's visit to address the United Nations. Obama later said pointedly that he would ignore the "noise that's out there" on the Iran issue.

Obama's aides were furious that Netanyahu was trying to put pressure on the president in the midst of the election campaign and refused to budge on the red-line issue, despite the risk of alienating pro-Israel voters in election battleground states like Florida and Ohio.

At the same time, Israeli officials - mindful of the danger of antagonizing the Jewish state's main ally and of poisoning relations with the man who could occupy the White House for another four years - moved into damage-control mode.

Michael Oren, Israeli ambassador to the United States, flew back to Jerusalem last weekend, during which he urged Netanyahu to tone down public statements that could be construed as interfering in the U.S. election or supporting Romney, according to sources in the Jewish community in Washington.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak visited Chicago and met privately on September 20 with Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a former close Obama aide, raising speculation that Emanuel might be used as a back-channel conduit to mend ties with the president.

The Israeli desire to defuse the crisis may also have reflected an interpretation of recent U.S. opinion polls showing a widening of Obama's lead over Romney, who has suffered a series of political stumbles.

Romney, speaking to reporters on his campaign plane, said he and Netanyahu agreed Iran must be denied nuclear capabilities but did not agree on specific "red lines" to confront Tehran.

"I do not believe in the final analysis we will have to use military action," Romney said. "I certainly hope we don't have to. I can't take that action off the table."

In his U.N. speech, Netanyahu held up a cartoon-like drawing of a bomb with a fuse and literally drew a red line just below a label reading "final stage," in which Iran would supposedly be 90 percent along the path to having weapons-grade material.

Nevertheless, his warning that Iran would be on the brink of developing a nuclear weapon in less than a year was widely interpreted as some giving breathing space to Obama, who has urged more time for sanctions and diplomacy to work.

By referring to a spring or summer 2013 time frame for Iran to complete the next stage of uranium enrichment, the Israeli leader seemed to dispel fears that Israel might strike Iran before the U.S. election.

Iran denies it is seeking to build nuclear weaponry.

Netanyahu's praise for Obama's stern words for Iran in his own U.N. speech on Tuesday - although it lacked any specific ultimatum - was also seen as a sign that the Israeli leader wanted to quell the unusually public dispute with Washington.

"I think we are moving in a direction where the differences that were there, which were always tactical and not strategic, are in fact being managed at this point," Dennis Ross, Obama's former Middle East adviser, told MSNBC.

Still, White House officials were pleased at avoiding an encounter with Netanyahu, who used an Oval Office meeting in 2011 to lecture Obama on Jewish history. Obama instead kept a lower-than-usual profile at this year's U.N. gathering, making a campaign-style appearance on the popular talk show "The View" and then quickly returning to electioneering.

Have you ever wondered how many water molecules it takes to form the crystal beginnings of every ice cube and snowflake? Until recently researchers weren?t quite sure.? But we now know the answer: 275.?

But how did they get such a precise number? Water absorbs light at one frequency, ice crystals at another.? By using a few tricks to control the number of molecules, the scientists examined the response of tiny clusters of water molecules to infrared light at sub-freezing temperatures?and slowly increased the number of molecules until they saw a change.? When the number of molecules reached 275 ? bingo ? the clusters began absorbing light like ice crystals. At 475 molecules the crystal is completely formed. The study is in the journal Science. The research creates the first-ever picture of how ice crystals are gradually formed from water.? Researchers say their method can be adapted for use with many other types of molecules and may potentially be used to look at a variety of chemical reactions between the interfaces of liquids, gases or solids?at the individual molecular level.

No respite in European car slump, says Renault's Ghosn

(Reuters) - European auto sales are headed for an 8 percent drop this year and further declines next year, said Carlos Ghosn, the chief executive officer of both Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co.

Despite the continent's financial crisis, Ghosn saw "zero chance" for a government-led restructuring of Europe's auto industry, akin to the restructuring of the U.S. industry in 2009. The U.S. restructuring was spurred by the bankruptcies of General Motors Corp., now reorganized as General Motors Co. , and Chrysler Corp.

"Every company is going to have to deal with its own problems," Ghosn said in an interview with Reuters Television at the Paris Auto Show.

Renault's arch-competitor in France, PSA Peugeot Citroen , has announced plans to close a factory to adjust to the downturn, but Ghosn said Renault is coping by cutting work days at its factories.

Total European auto sales fell more than 7 percent in the year to August. Europe accounts for half Renault's sales.

In a wide-ranging interview, Ghosn said the Bank of Japan had "obviously not" done enough to contain the surge in the value of the yen, which has sharply raised the cost of cars that Nissan exports from Japan.

He suggested there should be "more easing" by the Japanese central bank, even though the bank has launched three rounds of monetary easing over the past year.

"You have to judge people by their results," Ghosn added, indicating his frustration with the yen's resilient strength.

Meanwhile, Ghosn said, the tensions between China and Japan over offshore islands were "bad news in the short term" for Nissan's sales in China, causing traffic in the company's Chinese showrooms to drop considerably.

"We're watching carefully the situation, and we're adjusting our production," he said.

He hopes for a quick return to normal relations, he added, because "there is so much commonality of interests between China and Japan.

The CEO expressed continued confidence in the future for battery-powered electric cars, as opposed to gas-electric hybrid vehicles. While sales of the electric-powered Nissan Leaf have fallen far below forecasts, Nissan's partner, Renault, is about to launch its own electric car, the Zoe.

The main drawback to higher sales of electrics, Ghosn said, is lack of rapid-recharging infrastructure. Hopefully that will be resolved, Ghosn added, by governments interested in promoting alternatives to gasoline-powered vehicles.

Yahoo gives new CFO big raise to leave his old job

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Yahoo's new chief financial officer is getting a big raise to join the struggling Internet company.

Ken Goldman, who will become Yahoo's CFO next month, is starting out with an annual salary of $600,000 and could earn a bonus of up to $540,000, according to documents filed Wednesday. He is also getting restricted stock and stock options valued at $12 million.

The stock awards will gradually vest over the next three to four years, and could end up being worth more or less than $12 million. That depends on how Yahoo's long-slumping stock fares under a new management team led by Marissa Mayer, who became the company's CEO two months ago.

The pay package represents a significant bump from Goldman's current job as CFO of Fortinet Inc., a security software maker based in Sunnyvale, Calif., less than five miles from Yahoo Inc.'s headquarters in the same city.

Fortinet paid Goldman an annual salary of $327,818, according to the company's most recent compensation disclosures six months ago. Goldman, 63, also was eligible for a bonus of about $200,000 at Fortinet. Including stock options and other awards, Goldman's total 2011 compensation package at Fortinet was valued at $1.6 million.

Although Goldman already is in line to make more money in his new job, Yahoo also agreed to give him some additional restricted stock to compensate him for some of the long-term incentives he is giving up at Fortinet. The so-called "make-whole" payment consists of 76,000 units of restricted Yahoo stock that will be doled out on a monthly basis during the next year. Yahoo didn't place a value on this batch of restricted stock. At Yahoo's current market value, the restricted stock would be worth about $1.2 million.

Yahoo's stock has been sagging for years as the company fell behind Google Inc. and Facebook Inc. in the race for online advertising revenue. The shares added a penny to $15.68 in afternoon trading.

Mayer, a former Google executive, is drawing up a new business plan in Yahoo's latest turnaround attempt. As part of that process, Mayer decided to bring in a new CFO to help execute her strategy.

Goldman's starting salary at Yahoo matches what his predecessor, Tim Morse, was getting before his responsibilities were expanded in a management shake-up last year. After Yahoo fired Carol Bartz as its CEO, Morse served as the company's interim leader for four months. Yahoo raised Morse's salary from $600,000 to $750,000.

Yahoo hasn't disclosed whether Morse, 43, will receive a severance package when he leaves the company.
