ScienceDaily (Feb. 23, 2012) ? An international team of researchers, with the participation of IAC astronomers, has discovered that the chemical structure of Earth-like planets can be very different from the bulk composition of Earth. This may have a dramatic effect on the existence and formation of the biospheres and life on Earth-like planets.

The study of the photospheric stellar abundances of the planet-host stars is the key to understanding how protoplanets form, as well as which protoplanetary clouds evolve planets and which do not. These studies, which have important implications for models of giant planet formation and evolution, also help us to investigate the internal and atmospheric structure and composition of extrasolar planets..

Theoretical studies suggest that C/O and Mg/Si, are the most important elemental ratios in determining the mineralogy of terrestrial planets, and they can give us information about the composition of these planets. The C/O ratio controls the distribution of Si among carbide and oxide species, while Mg/Si gives information on the silicate mineralogy. In 2010 Bond et al. (2010b) carried out the first numerical simulations of planet formation in which the chemical composition of the proto-planetary cloud was taken as an input parameter. Terrestrial planets were found to form in all the simulations with a wide variety of chemical compositions so these planets might be very different from Earth.

Delgado Mena et al. (2010) have carried out the first detailed and uniform study of C, O, Mg and Si abundances for 61 stars with detected planets and 270 stars without detected planets from the homogeneous high-quality unbiased HARPS GTO sample. They found mineralogical ratios quite different from those in the Sun, showing that there is a wide variety of planetary systems which are unlike the Solar System. Many planetary-host stars present a Mg/Si value lower than 1, so their planets will have a high Si content to form species such as MgSiO3. This type of composition can have important implications for planetary processes like plate tectonics, atmospheric composition and volcanism.

'There could be billions of Earth-like planets in the Universe but a great majority of them may have a totally different internal and atmospheric structure. Building planets in chemically non-solar environments (which are very common in the Universe) may lead to the formation of strange worlds, very different from the Earth! The amount of radioactive and some refractory elements (especially Si) may have drastic implications for planetary processes such as plate tectonics and volcanic activity,' concludes Garik Israelian.

The latest numerical simulations have shown that a wide range of extrasolar terrestrial planet bulk compositions are likely to exist. Planets simulated as forming around stars with Mg/Si ratios less than 1 are found to be Mg-depleted (compared to Earth), consisting of silicate species such as pyroxene and various types of feldspars. Planetary carbon abundances also vary in accordance with the host stars' C/O ratio. The predicted abundances are in keeping with observations of polluted white dwarfs (expected to have accreted their inner planets during their previous red giant stage).

'The observed variations in the key C/O and Mg/Si ratios for known planetary host stars implies that a wide variety of extrasolar terrestrial planet compositions are likely to exist, ranging from relatively "Earth-like" planets to those that are dominated by C, such as graphite and carbide phases (e.g. SiC, TiC),' Delgado Mena stresses.

The results of Delgado Mena et al. (2010) were used in this study as they are the first to determine the abundance of all of the required elements in a completely internally consistent manner, using high quality spectra and an identical approach for all stars and elements, for a large sample of both host and non-host stars.

The chemical and dynamical simulations were combined by assuming that each embryo retains the composition of its formation location and contributes the same composition to the simulated terrestrial planet. The innermost terrestrial planets (located within ?0.5 AU from the host star) contain a significant amount of the refractory elements Al and Ca (?47% of the planetary mass). Planets forming beyond ?0.5 AU from the host star contain steadily less Al and Ca with increasing distance. One planetary system, 55 Cnc, has a C/O ratio above 1 (C/O = 1.12). This system produced carbon-enriched "Earth-like" planets. All of the terrestrial planets considered in this work have compositions dominated by O, Fe, Mg and Si, most of these elements being delivered in the form of silicates or metals (in the case of iron). However, important differences between those planets forming in systems with C/O < 0.8 (HD17051, HD19994) and those with C/O > 0.8 (55Cnc) have been found.

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistan's foreign minister has cautioned Afghanistan that it would be "preposterous" to expect Islamabad to deliver Taliban leader Mullah Omar for peace talks.

Hina Rabbani Khar spoke Friday after talks between the leaders of Pakistan and Afghanistan about what Islamabad could do to help the peace process.

Pakistan is seen as key because many of the Taliban's leaders, including Omar, are believed to be based on its territory.

Khar says Afghanistan has not explained how exactly Kabul wants Islamabad to help. Her remarks suggest little progress had been made in the meetings in the Pakistani capital.

She said that if Kabul has "unrealistic, almost ridiculous expectations," then there is no "common ground to begin with."

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? The Afghan president says "impediments" in ties between Kabul and Islamabad must soon be removed so that progress can be made in peace talks to end the war in Afghanistan.

Hamid Karzai says the two countries need to resolve these problems "sooner rather than later." He did not elaborate.

Karzai spoke Friday after talks with Pakistan's civilian and military leaders aimed at trying to secure their cooperation in bringing Afghan Taliban leaders ? who are believed to be in Pakistan ? to the negotiating table.

The U.S. is backing talks with the Taliban, but mistrust on all sides is hampering the process.

Karzai gave little indication of progress, saying all sides still need to formulate a policy and "actually act upon it."

CORVALLIS, Ore. ? Oregon State head football coach Mike Riley announced Tuesday the hiring of Rod Perry as the secondary coach. Perry?s appointment is contingent on Oregon State University's Administration and Human Resources' approval.?

Perry replaces Keith Heyward, who resigned last month. The 58-year-old Perry rejoins Riley after serving as his cornerbacks coach with the San Diego Chargers from 1999-2001. Perry spent the last five seasons as special assistant to the defense for the Indianapolis Colts, coaching in two Super Bowls.

?

?I targeted Coach Perry as a possibility to join our staff from the beginning of my search, and I feel fortunate to have somebody of his caliber coming to Oregon State,? Riley said.? ?He has coached in the professional ranks for 22 years and has college experience as well. He will be a tremendous asset in the development of our secondary and our team overall.?

?

His professional coaching career is dotted with highlights; players he coached earned eight Pro Bowl honors (including two alternates); Colts safety Bob Sanders was the 2007 Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year; and the 2008 Colts allowed just six touchdown passes -- the lowest 16-game total in NFL history.

?

"Rod Perry is a tremendous coach who has a great understanding of defensive backfield play and is an excellent communicator,? former Colts head coach and current NBC analyst Tony Dungy said. ?Rod is one of the best technique teachers I've ever been around."

Perry is a 1983 graduate of Fresno State University, but played collegiately at the University of Colorado, earning All-Big Eight Conference honors as a senior and Honorable Mention All-America. Prior to Colorado, Perry attended Fresno City College and was a Junior College All-American. The native of Fresno attended Hoover High School where his jersey number is permanently retired. Following his college career he was a 1975 NFL Draft fourth round selection of the Los Angeles Rams, where he earned 1978 and ?80 Pro Bowl honors. Perry, who concluded his NFL career playing the 1983 and ?84 seasons with the Cleveland Browns, is a member of the Rams? 40^th Anniversary Team and started in the 1980 Super Bowl. Perry also played his first two seasons with the Rams with OSU and State of Oregon Sports Hall of member, and current OSU broadcaster Steve Preece.

?Coach Riley is a great person and he has been very loyal to me; I?m excited to be on his coaching staff again,? Perry said. ?Initially, I wasn?t thinking about the college level, but the more I thought about it the more this opportunity appealed to me.?

Perry embarked on his coaching career in 1985 at Columbia University, before moving on to Fresno City College in 1986 and Fresno State in 1987-88. His professional coaching career began in 1989 with the Seattle Seahawks (1989-91/secondary) and also has included positions with the Rams (1992-94/secondary), Houston Oilers (1995-96/defensive backs), San Diego Chargers (1997-2001/cornerbacks) and Carolina Panthers (2002-06/secondary).

?I?ve been away from the college game for a while, but coaching is coaching,? Perry said. ?I missed working with young people, and I?m looking forward to being a part of all facets of their lives, not just football.?

Tablet sales will hit nearly 500 million units a year by 2015, according to a new report by BI Intelligence.

Global tablet sales in 2015 will exceed the number of PCs currently sold per year (~360 million) and make tablets a $100+ billion market.

The forecast, which includes e-readers, predicts that tablet sales will grow at better than a 50% compound annual growth rate over the next few years.

The growth will be driven by falling prices combined with tablet penetration in the enterprise and education markets, as well as emerging markets.

Here are some highlights from the report, whose lead author is BI Intelligence analyst Alex Cocotas:

• We really are in a post-PC era. Smartphone unit sales passed PC sales last year. Tablet sales will follow in a few years. As Steve Jobs said, PCs will become like "trucks" and tablets like "cars": PCs will still be around, and they'll still be a big market, but they won't become the most common way people do their computing anymore.?
• Tablets are a disruptive technology relative to PCs: Not as good at some things (spreadsheets and the like), but much better at other things (browsing the web, apps), cheaper, and improving all of the time.?

Here's what will be the biggest drivers of the growth in tablets:

• Lower prices. The Kindle Fire has been a smashing success, showing the pent-up demand for a good, sub-$500 tablet. We think Google will use its Motorola acquisition to come out with a cheap, subsidized tablet a la Amazon. And we think Apple will lower prices, most likely by selling older models at a lower price point like it did with the iPhone. And we think e-readers (in light blue in the chart below) will remain a big market as their price drops near to zero and they work as loss-leaders for digital publishing.
• The enterprise. Though tablets won't work for a lot of business applications, it's undeniable that they're making headway in the enterprise. We see this accelerating.?
• Education. iBooks was just the start. This is a sector that is crying out for disruption and for a useful, lightweight computing device.?
• Emerging markets. A billion more people are coming online, and most of them are going to do it through mobile. A lot of them will also do it through tablets, which are cheaper and more convenient.?

New cases of rare genetic disorder identified

Scientists at the University of Liverpool, working with international partners, have shown a rare genetic disease, that causes crippling osteoarthritis in the spine and major joints, is far more prevalent worldwide than previously thought.

Researchers have identified more than 100 new cases of the disease, called alkaptonuria (AKU) in a small community in Vellore, India, bringing the total number of patients there to 130. Approximately 40 patients have been found in a village in Southern Jordan, but previously the disease had been unknown to healthcare workers in the region. There were only four known cases in the UK in 2003, but this has since risen to more than 80 patients across the country.

Research findings suggest that more work is needed to raise the profile of the disease in countries around the world so that it can be correctly identified by medics. It is thought to affect one in 250,000 people worldwide, but many remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as osteoarthritis.

Scientists at Liverpool are bringing international researchers together as part of the AKU Society to establish a global network that will help further understanding of the condition within communities and healthcare practices. The AKU Society was established in Liverpool in 2003 and supports patients diagnosed with the disease.

Patients being treated for AKU do not have enough of the enzyme, homogentisic acid oxidase, which causes acid to build up in the body. Some of this acid is eliminated in the urine, but the remainder is deposited in body tissue where it is toxic. As a result, a black pigment, called ochronosis, forms and binds to bone, cartilage and skin. This can cause erosion of the cartilage and patients often have to undergo joint replacement surgery.

Dr Lakshminarayan Ranganath, researcher at the University's Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease and clinician at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, said: "AKU was the first genetic disease to be identified by scientists. It was described in 1902 by an English physician, but more than 100 years later there is still no cure for the disease. A drug candidate has recently been identified and is awaiting clinical trials to see if it could be used to treat AKU patients. We want to identify as many people with the condition as possible to ensure these important trials go ahead.

"Recent findings in India and Jordan show us that this disease is more prevalent than current statistics suggest and we urgently need to get research out into healthcare practices around the world so that cases can be identified and diagnosed correctly. We want to expand our international links as well as promote PhD opportunities to young researchers looking to progress our knowledge of the disease.

Professor James Gallagher, AKU researcher at the University's Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease, said: "We are currently working to understand why the black pigment that attaches itself to joint cartilage only attaches to certain areas, whilst other sections of cartilage remain pigment-free. If we can understand the mechanisms of how the pigment binds in the body then we may be able to prevent the disease developing."

Isaac Jebaraj, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India, said: "My work is focused on a Romani Community in South India, where we have identified approximately 100 cases of AKU. It is important for us to reach these communities as traditionally they do not attend hospitals for aliments, preferring to use herbs and oils instead. As such we anticipate that there are many more people in India with this condition that have yet to be diagnosed with the condition.

"We have now treated many of the community with anti-inflammatory drugs and some have had surgery for joint replacement. To ensure that potential new treatments reach these communities, it is important that scientists work together to progress with drug trials."

Despite the proliferation of the Internet, radio remains the single most important medium for communication and information access to the widest possible audience. Have we taken radio for granted in our high-tech world? I think the answer is an emphatic ?yes!? We may not realize this, but many of us are constantly on the air nowadays. It?s no longer just about the DJ on the broadcast radio airwaves, the ham radio operator keying Morse Code on a primitive transmitter or the pilot talking with her air traffic controllers to ensure a safe flight.

The world is now comprised of an uncountable number of tiny radios found in many electronic devices we have come to enjoy and use every day. We know, for instance, that an iPhone 4S contains at least six distinct radios: a radio capable of receiving and transmitting signals on the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band, a radio that can talk to Bluetooth devices such as headsets and keyboards, two different radios for talking on the CDMA and GSM cellular frequencies, another radio to facilitate Internet access through the cellular data networks and, finally, a GPS receiver. When you use your iPhone, it is safe to say you are probably using at least two, if not more, different radios all at the same time!

How is it we have come to forget about radio and take it for granted in our highly-developed technological society? I think the answer is that radios are not as obvious as they were once upon a time. In the not-too-distant past, if you listened to the radio, you were looking at a separate box with buttons, dials and switches and a set of headphones or a pair of speakers. If you were a radio star, you held a microphone and faced a bewildering panel of carts and controls. If you talked on a two-way radio, you probably had a special license or it was part of your job and you either held a small walkie-talkie type box or you sat in front of a bunch of equipment with lots of buttons, dials, knobs, meters and switches. In any case, the radio part of the task you were performing was front and center. That?s not so now.

When do you think about radio today? Perhaps, most of us really give it serious thought when we?re riding in our cars or listening to our stereos at home. Otherwise, although the radios in our lives are present, they?re usually buried. When I was talking with a friend about the radios in the iPhone, she thought I was referring to all the radio apps out there for listening to broadcast stations streamed on the Internet. Despite the shrinking of radios into tiny chips on circuit boards hidden inside our favorite electronic devices, we?re using them more often today than we ever have at any time in the past. When we talk on a cordless or cell phone, we?re talking on a radio. When we use a laptop computer to go online from our favorite coffee shop, we?re on the air. Believe it or not, we are all radio stars!

What does all this mean for the world? I think we?re slowly forgetting about radio?s past and, in the process, we may be leaving many people in disadvantaged populations and developing nations behind. The advent of Internet streaming and satellite radio has been cited as justification for massive cutbacks in the availability of programming on the shortwave radio broadcast bands, despite the fact that these radios are the only way hundreds of millions of people may be able to gain timely access to entertainment and important information about their world.

The long-time switch from the inherently non-visual radio medium to television and, now, streaming video on the Internet has meant that it can be more challenging for blind people to enjoy many forms of entertainment that were once more accessible. This is probably a significant reason for the resurgence of old-time-radio listening in the blind community.

How about emergency communication? What happens when the cell towers are blown down in a hurricane? What would happen if a significant number of the satellites we rely on for communication and navigation suddenly became unavailable? What would the world?s survivors do in the event of a massive electromagnetic pulse or nuclear war? The uber-geeky amateur (ham) radio operators have the enthusiasm, innovative spirit, qualifications and access to older equipment it would take to communicate during an emergency and coordinate the reorganization of the world when our high-tech gadgets and infrastructure become useless.

Unfortunately, the world?s governments continue to deemphasize radio. Shortwave broadcasts to many parts of the world are cut every year. Fewer and fewer people are interested in ham radio and there?s no longer a Morse Code requirement for any class of amateur radio license in America and many other countries. Morse Code can cut through radio noise like no other mode of radio transmission, but who is going to know how to use it when it is needed most?

How can we continue to move forward into the bright future of a technology-driven world while ensuring our safety and promoting stability and security? I think one small thing we can do is to keep radio in our minds and think about it a little each day. When you?re checking your email, talking or tweeting on your iPhone, remember that you are using several tiny radios to make it all happen. When you?re listening to satellite radio or streaming your favorite station through ooTunes, think about all the people in the developing world who don?t have access to this content and remember that an older technology called shortwave radio can reach them if we ensure its continued existence. Finally, think about those of us who have passed numerous qualification exams and learned Morse Code to earn our ham radio licenses, which we may someday need to use as a means of providing life-saving communications services in the event of a disaster.

?Odd question, but is it illegal for someone to take a photo of your license plate? I ask this because I was recently involved in an incident where, a lady thought I cut her off in traffic. I merely switched lanes, but this seemed to displease her a lot. I could see in my mirrors that she was obviously trying to take a picture of my plate. It actually bothered me that she would do such a move.?

I am only a traffic lawyer but, in my opinion, it is NOT illegal to photograph another driver?s license plate.

Philip,

The answer is ?both?. A police officer may not open your glove compartment or trunk without a warrant, probable cause or your permission.

Some police officers will ?trick? a motorist into consenting but saying something like ?You?ll be better off if you let me look?. Don?t fall for it.

They may look (without a warrant) unless you give them permission or they have some type of probable cause.

?Can I be prosecuted for a speeding violation after the fact, based on evidence found online? For example, say I go out late at night and drive 100 on an empty road and no cop sees me, but then I post a picture of the speedometer on Facebook showing how fast I was going. Could a cop use that to prosecute me??

Carl,

I don?t think that you can or will be prosecuted for a photo of a speedometer displaying 100 mph. Even if you were speeding, there are too many unknown items for the officer to make out a case including who was driving, where you were driving, etc., etc.

With that said, please don?t speed (especially 100 mph) as it is very dangerous to you and others.

Eric,

It is illegal to obstruct any of the brake lights (including the third one). You?ll need to get a spoiler that has its own brake light or get a spoiler that doesn?t obstruct the existing one.

?If I get a speeding ticket tossed out of court, why does it remain permanently online at my state?s website? If a ticket is thrown out, shouldn?t it be erased from my record? (I?m from Washington State.)?

That?s weird. If you beat any traffic ticket (including a speeding ticket), it is as if the ticket was never issued. Therefore, it should be removed from your record. I recommend that you contact the DMV and ask them to remove it.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Coach Sharon Versyp knows there is nothing more important for her Purdue team than to learn from its mistakes.

The No. 16 Boilermakers wasted an eight-point second-half lead on Sunday and fell at No. 10 Ohio State, 80-71. But with just a little bit of fine-tuning, Versyp says Purdue can remain at or near the top of the Big Ten standings.

"I thought we played real good basketball today and that's what was good," she said. "We made some mistakes. We have to learn from that. But that's what you want to be doing at this time of year."

Purdue (19-6, 9-3) came into the showdown at Value City Arena with the lead in the conference. Instead, it fell into a four-team dogfight with Penn State, Ohio State and Nebraska ? each with three losses in league play ? heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.

"You always say that the next game is important," Versyp said. "Well, when it comes down the stretch, jockeying for the top four spots (in the Big Ten tournament), you've got to take care of your home and you've got to steal some on the road."

The Boilermakers have home games against Penn State and Indiana bookending games at Michigan State and Michigan.

"We have a lot of things that we can learn from," said Brittany Rayburn, who led Purdue with 22 points. "We're getting to that point where you want to start peaking. We're playing well. There's still a lot of things to learn from and you learn every day."

Ohio State trailed for most of the second half before Samantha Prahalis, who scored 21 of her 26 points after the break, led Ohio State (22-3, 9-3) back to take a late lead.

Purdue's Courtney Moses hit a left-handed follow with just over a minute left to narrow what had been a six-point deficit to 73-71.

The Buckeyes called time out with 43 seconds left. Prahalis, the Big Ten's second-leading scorer at 21.4 points a game, tossed an inbound pass into center Ashley Adams, who quickly kicked it right back to her. Prahalis' 3-pointer from the right wing pushed the lead to five and spurred a clinching 7-0 run over the final minute.

"Ashley posted up pretty strong and I saw that she was open, so I passed to her," Prahalis said. "She made a great pass back and I hit it."

Versyp regretted a slip by her defense.

"We just made a mistake, a big one," she said. "If we could have had a good defensive stand, then we had a play set up to come down and execute. Them nailing that shot, obviously, was the big key."

There were many positives for the Boilermakers. Sam Ostarello, who had 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the way to an overwhelming 41-24 advantage on the boards. They shot 48 percent from the field.

It seemed as if the Boilermakers controlled the paint throughout the game.

"It was huge. It was working," Ostarello said of her team's inside-out passing on offense. "We just kept trying to do that because we were successful in the first half."

But the Boilermakers also had some problems, totaling 18 turnovers. Versyp made it clear that there will be plenty of things to iron out in practice this week.

Purdue was 9 of 13 at the line to Ohio State's 20 of 27.

Buckeyes coach Jim Foster expected the Boilermakers to be ready and rested. They didn't disappoint in building a six-point halftime lead and leading most of the second half.

"They played great," Foster said. "They're a senior-dominated team. They had a week to prepare. They wanted this. Who wouldn't love to be in that situation? And playing at this time of year?"

Now the Boilermakers will try to regroup and bounce back.

The road ahead will be difficult for everyone ? particularly the four teams at the top of the Big Ten standings.

"When you play at home, you usually have a good shot of beating any team," said Versyp, a former star Purdue player in her seventh year as a head coach in the conference. "But other teams are coming in and beating you right off the court. Top to bottom, this is one of the toughest leagues ? moreso than any other year. And the Big Ten tournament is going to be really amazing."

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa ? The 13th-ranked Mount Mercy women?s basketball team played its final regular season home game on Saturday, sending its seven seniors out in style with an 83-66 victory over AIB in Midwest Collegiate Conference action at Hennessey Recreation Center.

After an early 5-0 deficit, the Mustangs dominated the contest and led, 42-29, at intermission. Mount Mercy led by as many as 22 in the second half and cruised to their sixth straight win. The Mustangs improved to 21-7 overall and 13-3 in the MCC, their third 20-win season in the past four years.

Mount Mercy?s seniors combined for 66 points on Saturday. Laura Lippert poured in a game-high 20 points, while Micha Mims added 17 points and eight rebounds. Emily Greiner joined them in double figures with 16 points. Bria Fields chipped in six points off the bench, Mackenzie Skay had four points and four boards and Becca Lampe scored three points. The Mustangs? other senior, Ashley Koch, did not play due to a knee injury.

Ashley Vratny scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Eagles (12-16, 5-11 MCC). Morgan Hansen tallied 17 points and five boards, Hannah Redenius 10 points and six rebounds.

Mount Mercy, currently alone in second place in the MCC, wraps up the regular season with two crucial road games next week. The Mustangs have a one-game lead on Iowa Wesleyan (16-9, 12-4 MCC) and face the Tigers on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Ruble Arena in Mount Pleasant. Iowa Wesleyan knocked off Mount Mercy, 67-51, on Jan. 13 in Cedar Rapids.
